Carbohydrates are the primary energy source used to fuel our muscle during exercise. Our body uses the carbohydrates we consume from foods and glycogen reserves (stored form of carbohydrates) in our liver and muscle. As training volume and intensity increases carbohydrate levels are depleted and, if we don’t replenish energy, we risk the body breaking down protein as calories and burning muscle mass. Carbohydrate supplements are used more efficiently than solid foods which ensures a more adequate energy supply to muscle pre, intra and post-workout. This will optimise muscle performance and recovery. Best used in conjunction with a protein powder.
